Manakamana Temple ·

Introduction

Manakamana Temple stands on a hilltop in Shahid Lakhan Rural Municipality, Gorkha, above the meeting point of the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers, about 1,300 m above sea level.

The name joins 'man' (heart) and 'kamana' (wish). Devotees deeply believe that the goddess fulfils the wish of anyone who prays with a true heart.

From the temple you can see the Himalayan peaks of Manaslu, Lamjung Himal and the Annapurna range.

The legend

According to legend, in the 17th century the queen of King Ram Shah of Gorkha held divine power, a secret known only to her devotee Lakhan Thapa Magar.

One day the king saw the queen as the goddess and Lakhan Thapa as a lion. After he told her, the king died, and the queen followed him onto the funeral pyre. Before she went, she promised Lakhan Thapa that she would appear again.

Some months later a farmer ploughing his field split a stone, and a stream of blood and milk flowed from it. It stopped when Lakhan Thapa performed worship, and the temple of the goddess was built on that very spot.

The link with Supadeurali

According to cultural historian Rajendra Acharya, Queen Lilawati, wife of King Ram Shah of Gorkha, was the daughter of King Dhwajan Shah of Khanchi.

Devotees believe that after leaving her body she appeared as Manakamana Devi in Gorkha, her husband's home, and as Supadeurali Devi in Khanchi, her parents' home. So at both temples devotees worship the same power: Jagadamba, the mother who fulfils wishes.

The temple and its priests

Manakamana Temple is built in the traditional Nepali pagoda style. Its priests come from the family line of Lakhan Thapa Magar, a tradition that continues to this day.

The 2015 earthquake damaged the temple. It was rebuilt under the Department of Archaeology, with gold plating on the roof, doors and pinnacle, and the work was completed in 2018.

Cable car and getting there

Manakamana is about 106 km from Kathmandu and about 94 km from Pokhara.

From Kurintar on the Prithvi Highway, the Manakamana cable car reaches the temple in about 10 minutes. Running since 1998, it is about 2.8 km long.

Those who prefer to walk can climb from the Anbu Khaireni side in about three hours.

Festivals and faith

During Dashain and Navaratri, especially on Durga Ashtami, the temple is crowded with devotees from across Nepal and abroad.

Many devotees make a vow here and return to make an offering once their wish comes true. Feeding the pigeons in the temple courtyard is also a tradition that goes back hundreds of years.
